Wheat Kings Nab Highly Touted Prospect
15-year-old prospect Austin Boo was a highly touted CJHL prospect at one point, before opting to attempt to play NCAA hockey instead of Major Junior. He spent last season with the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League's Pembina Valley Hawks, playing at 14 years old in a league dominated by 17 and 18 year olds. Boo scored 44 goals and 71 points in 40 games, leading the league in goal scoring and ranking fourth in points.
After some convincing, Boo left the Hawks - he current has 15 goals and 22 points in 12 games to start the year - and his college plans behind, joining the CJHL's Brandon Wheat Kings in the middle of the league's first-ever pre-season. He hopes the move will kickstart a career in the CHL. "In the end I figured this was just a good career decision," Boo says. "I'll be here for four years and there's more CHL scouts here than anywhere else, obviously. My ultimate goal is to play in the CHL."
Boo is a power forward with a well-rounded game. He's very physical, is generally disciplined and has great hands and a good scoring touch. At 6'2 and 202 pounds, he's got a huge frame and is very strong for his age. He's expected to make his debut at centre for the Wheat Kings later in this pre-season.
Calgary Discussing With Crawford
The Calgary Hitmen are attempting to lure a big name of their own into the CJHL. They've been talking to the agent of American-born left winger Jesse Crawford about getting him to come north of the border to further his hockey career.
The 16 year old Crawford spent last year and the first part of this one with the US National Team Development Program squad, and in 53 games over that time has scored 30 goals and 52 points. The 6'0, 205 pound Crawford is known as a fleet-footed, agile goal scorer, but also one-dimensional player who doesn't play much defense, is an average at best playmaker, and is not very physical.
Crawford's agent has said he intends to come to the CJHL at some point, but may finish the year with the NTDP squad and join the CJHL as a seventeen-year-old in S2. The Hitmen would still own his rights.
Pats, Hitmen off to Quick Starts
The Regina Pats are off to a 2-0 start in the CJHL pre-season, while the Calgary Hitmen are not far back at 1-0-1 as the first two days have come to a close.
The Pats have been led by 17-year-old defenseman Fabian Korpikoski and 15-year-old right winger Mathias Trattnig, who each have three points, while Hitmen netminder Alberto Trebil has faced 75 shots - tops in the league - but stopped 70 of them for a .933 save percentage in his team's start.
Meanwhile, the Medicine Hat Tigers are 0-2 to start the pre-season, but two of their players are off to early starts in boosting their draft stock: LW Rylan Alexeev and LW Giovanny Micheletti each have three points in two games to lead the draft eligible players in scoring.
The CHL Scouting Bureau will release it's pre-season Draft Rankings following the conclusion of the CJHL pre-season.
Note: since the junior league talent level is rather low, I may add a couple players once in a while like this. it'll always be in pre-season and never without an article written, though. Also, the CHL Scouting posts following the Junior league will not be counted for AP for myself / Grand Forks, they are simply written by me to increase enjoyment of the league.
